Sandra Xuereb came out of the gates flying with a great 196 first game, which was enough for her to keep 14-year-old Ruslana Grima at bay in second place at the end of the 4 game qualifying round. The other 4 qualifiers were Angele Azzopardi, Natasha Bianchi, another 14-year-old Kathryn Fenech and Jessica Farrugia. The fight in the final stages saw Farrugia win 4 out of 5 direct clashes, to climb up to 3rd, while Fenech bowled the highest pin fall of the round to finish second after losing the last match against Xuereb, who emerged a worthy winner on the day, following up on her niece Raquel’s win in the Silver Cup in July.
After dominating the male section with a strong 175 scratch average over 4 games, Keith Farrugia started the round robin with a 193 game and a win against eventual 2nd placed Damian Pisani. Farrugia however faltered in the next few games, allowing veteran Ian Howard, who won 4 of his 5 encounters, to shoot up to first place. The young Travis Barbara had an impressive showing to finish in 3rd place, followed by George Camilleri, Farrugia with youngster Kieran Seguna ending in 6th place.
